Planning to attend your first art fair? Here are some tips to make the most of your experience.

Before the show, find out which galleries and artists will be exhibiting — and learn a little bit about them.

Expect to do a lot of walking, so plan accordingly. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, and pack snacks and water.

If you are an artist, leave your business cards and portfolio at home. This is not a place to pitch galleries.

Get to the show early and take your time. Focus on what you like, not what others are interested in.

As you view different mediums, try to develop an eye for what you like and respond to. Ask questions. Gallerists are happy to discuss their artists.

Be respectful. Don’t take a call when you’re in someone’s booth, and don’t touch any artwork. And don’t criticize work — you never know if the artist is standing behind you.

It’s OK to ask for a discount on a piece you are interested in purchasing, just don’t ask for an unreasonably large discount.

Take time to check out the fair’s educational programs. Experts from around the globe may be speaking.

Take advantage of what the city has to offer in terms of galleries and exhibitions outside of the art fair.

And most importantly, have fun. Enjoy the art.
